Hermsdorf vocational fair: What students really wanted to know about KOMOS today

May 20, 2026

At the vocational training fair „ARBEITen im Saale-Holzland-Kreis“ in Hermsdorf, we spoke with many students, pupils, and parents. A preliminary observation: The questions were more specific than we expected.

Instead of the general question „What can I become with you?“, questions like: „Do you already work with AI?“, „How far along are you with automation?“, „Do you as an intern also do something real or just watch?“ Young people today know pretty precisely what they want – and they quickly notice whether a company is just spreading buzzwords or actually delivering something.

Three topics that came up again and again

AI in everyday work – concrete, not abstract At KOMOS, AI is not just a PowerPoint topic. We have developed our own KOMOS app, which we use to evaluate production processes, energy consumption, and plant data in real time. Together with our partner Centrum AI, we are working on a supply chain project that makes AI usable in the supply chain for medium-sized companies. Our apprentices don’t see AI as something they can do Theoretically It works, but how it is actually used in a production facility with 70 employees.

Modern manufacturing under one roof KOMOS combines punching, turning, injection molding and assembly in one facility – this is unusual in the industry and a real advantage for apprentices. Those who learn to be tool and process mechanics for plastics technology with us not only see a part of the process but the entire value chain.

A question that remained unanswered A student from Eisenberg asked at the stand: „If I break something at your place, will someone immediately scold me?“ The honest answer: No. In a family business with short paths, you learn by doing – and also by making mistakes. That’s not a marketing promise; it’s reality when 70 people work together to manufacture over 25 million parts per year.

Four vocational training positions at KOMOS

We train in four professions:

  • Tool mechanic (m/f/d)
  • Process mechanics for plastics and rubber technology (m/f/d)
  • Industrial sales representatives (m/w/d)
  • Mechatronic engineers (m/w/d)

All four professions are linked to the topics that were most common in Hermsdorf: digitalization, AI, and automation. Those who start here work from day one in a production that is just reinventing itself – we are doing just that as the second generation of a family business.

Thanks from Hermsdorf

Many thanks to the employment agency, the job center, and the district administration for the excellent organization – and to everyone who was at our stand. If you still have any questions or would like to get started right away:
