KOMOS launches innovation project GrAIfbAR – Securing knowledge, relieving people’s burdens, shaping the future
December 8, 2025
KOMOS GmbH is taking an important step towards the future of production with the GrAIfbAR research project. Together with the ifaa – Institute for Applied Labor Science, the Hochschule Niederrhein, Consipio Software Engineering and G.A. RÖDERS We are developing a novel AI-based solution that makes experience-based knowledge visible, makes robotics more flexible to use, and makes our employees feel noticeably more relieved.
The challenge:
As a medium-sized manufacturer of stamped, turned and plastic injection parts, we move between 100 pieces and one million units every day – a variety that puts classic automation to its limits. Many systems are only worthwhile at high volumes or are too inflexible for our varied processes. Specifically, we are testing the GrAIfbAR technology in deburring and casting production. – Work steps that have so far been strongly influenced by experience and manual dexterity.
The solution:
GrAIfbAR combines collaborative robotics, AI-based knowledge transfer, and digital work instructions so that humans and machines can work together optimally. The system learns directly from our employees. – through intelligent „on-the-job“ learning.
Our goals:
- Securing valuable experience from our employees before it is lost
- Create more ergonomic and attractive workplaces
- Professionals are being relieved of tasks and given training
- Make automation economically viable even for small batch sizes
- Increase flexibility and process reliability in the long term
„We don’t automate to replace people – we automate to strengthen them and keep knowledge intelligent within the company“explains Antje Blumentritt, Managing Director of KOMOS GmbH. „GrAIfbAR shows what modern industry in the small and medium-sized sector can look like: technologically leading, economically sound and at the same time human-oriented.“
Funding and project duration:
The three-year project begins on June 1, 2025 and will be carried out by Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in the program „Future of value creation“ Funded – an award for pioneering innovation in the German mid-market.
